Muharram
ٱلْمُحَرَّم
Muharram is a special month in Islam. It’s a time for peace,
where fighting is not allowed. The tenth day of Muharram,
called Ashura, is especially important.

Safar
صَفَر
The second month is called Safar. Some believe that in the past,
Arab people used to leave their homes during this time of year to find
food. This would leave their homes empty. And some people believe
that the meaning of the month comes from tales of Arabs looting the
homes of their enemies post-battle.

Rabi’ al-Awwal
رَبِيع ٱلْأَوَّل
The third month is Rabi’ al-Awwal. “Rabi'” means “spring.”
“al-Awwal” means “the first.”
4.
Rabi’ al-Thani
رَبِيع ٱلْآخِر
The fourth month.
5.
Jumada al-Ula
جُمَادَىٰ ٱلْأُولَىٰ
“Jumada” is an Arabic word that can mean “dry, or cold,” or
it may be related to the word “jamād,” meaning “to freeze.”
This suggests that the month’s name reflects the dry
conditions of the land during this time.

Jumada al-Thaniyah
جُمَادَىٰ ٱلْآخِرَة
The sixth month.

Rajab
رَجَب
Rajab means “respect” or “honor.”
It’s one of four sacred months in the Islamic calendar. Fighting
is not allowed during these months. Rajab is considered
Allah’s (SWT) month and is therefore a highly significant time
during the year.

Sha’ban
شَعْبَان
The eighth month of the Islamic year is called Sha’ban and is
considered the month of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
“Sha’ban” means “scattered,” which reflects how people
would spread out in search of water.
9.
Ramadan
رَمَضَان
The ninth month. The month of fasting, one of the five pillars of
Islam. Ramadan is the most revered month in the Hijri calendar,
during which Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to sunset
and give donations to the poor and needy.
10.
Shawwal
شَوَّال
The tenth month. The month following Ramadan, during which
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated.
11.
Dhul Qada
ذُو ٱلْقَعْدَة
It is a sacred month during which war is forbidden and people
are allowed to defend themselves if attacked.
12.
Dhul Hijjah
ذُو ٱلْقَعْدَة
The twelfth month. The month in which Hajj takes place.
Eid al-Adha is also celebrated in this month.
